This led her to feel abandoned by her widowed mother, a feeling she carries with her now. She wants to be a set designer for the theater, and when she was a young girl, she lived in a boarding school. The story begins with Therese Belivet who is just starting her life in Manhattan. It was unique at the time because it was the only lesbian novel to feature a joyful ending. It was published in 1952 and tells the story of love between two women.
